If you were one of the 11 million unique Canadian viewers who watched the Masters Tournament you might have seen a unique set of shoes dawned by famous lefty Phil Mickelson.

The three-time Masters Champion and six-time Majors Champions wore custom Nike Jordan 1 Low shoes with custom colors, graphics and artwork, designed by former 泊樂娛樂城app (泊樂娛樂城app) student-athlete James deVos.

鈥淭he shoes were inspired by Phil鈥檚 victories at Augusta in 2004, 2006, and 2010 鈥 one of which I remember vividly watching when I was five years old,鈥 said deVos. 鈥淭hey also pay tribute to Augusta鈥檚 roots, being built on the former Fruitland Nurseries, famous for its exotic plants. That floral legacy still lives on in every azalea, magnolia, and camellia across the course.鈥

Originally from Vanderhoof, BC, deVos played in the 泊樂娛樂城app with Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) from 2014鈥2017. deVos hockey career ended after the 2016/17 泊樂娛樂城app season and his future seemed uncertain.

鈥淗ockey had been such a big part of my life for so long that when it came time to step away, I honestly didn鈥檛 know what was next,鈥 said deVos. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have a clear plan, but what I did know is that a good start would be to study business but it wasn鈥檛 a passion. I still had that drive in me for something new, I just needed to find the right outlet.鈥

That outlet would come while pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Dalhousie University, majoring in accounting. deVos started experimenting with sneaker concepts in his spare time. It started small, but he quickly realized he loved the process of creating something from scratch, and turning an idea into a final product. 鈥淚t gave me a similar sense of purpose and challenge that hockey once did.鈥

deVos first project was in 2020: a pair of custom Vans for a local board short/clothing brand, in exchange for free clothes, an offer he couldn鈥檛 refuse as a broke university student. While deVos has a 鈥9-to-5鈥 at Marsh & McLennan Companies in the Captive Insurance sector, he鈥檚 been building his brand by networking through social media and taking on custom work for clients ranging from small businesses to professional athletes.

Along with Mickelson, deVos has created shoes for some notable people including rapper Mike (formerly Mike Stud), PGA Pro Max Homa, social media personality, podcaster, and entrepreneur, Jeff Wittek, writer and member of the 鈥榁log Squad鈥 Toddy Smith, Founder and CEO of 鈥楲.A.B. Golf鈥 Sam Hahn, founder of 鈥楩ull Wedge Golf鈥 Andrew McClelland, and Founders of Neighbourhood Creative and hosts of the 鈥楶odcast Money Buys Happiness鈥 Ernesto Gaita & Anthony Sorella.

鈥淭his project was a major milestone in my sneaker journey. Everything had to come together perfectly 鈥 late nights, last-minute tweaks, tight shipping deadlines. And even with all of that, there was still no guarantee they鈥檇 actually be worn,鈥 added deVos. 鈥淔ast forward, and not only did that dream come true 鈥 it happened with Phil Mickelson, one of the greatest to ever play the game wearing one of my designs at the biggest golf tournament in the world.鈥

deVos is one of the many 泊樂娛樂城app student-athletes who have found success outside of the game, reaching new found hopes and dreams they may not have had as they developed and grew within the league, both on and off the ice.

鈥淚 played on four different teams during my three years there, bouncing around between teams, and eventually working my way up to the top U18 Prep team. That journey taught me a lot about perseverance. Those lessons have stuck with me and helped shape who I am today, both personally and professionally. Everyone defines success differently, and OHA helped me build the foundation for my version of it,鈥 remarked deVos. 鈥淭he work ethic I developed through sports helped me stay consistent, but more importantly, hockey gave me the confidence to connect with people and the ability to market myself 鈥 mostly by letting my work speak for itself. That mindset made the transition feel natural, even if it wasn鈥檛 the path I expected.鈥

deVos career path has taken him on a journey he didn鈥檛 imagine as he pursued his hockey dreams at OHA and in the 泊樂娛樂城app. Today he resides in Oahu, Hawaii and mentioned a big perk of his job was connecting with like-minded individuals and learning from people who鈥檝e found success in their fields.

鈥淔or those kids in the 泊樂娛樂城app or other leagues, always remember: hockey is something you do 鈥 not who you are. It doesn鈥檛 define your identity. There will come a day when you hang up the skates regardless of what level you make it too, and that transition can be tough and one can almost feel lost 鈥 it definitely was that for me, more than I expected but it鈥檚 okay to feel that way. But my advice: find something else you love, and chase it. I know it sounds clich茅, but it鈥檚 a cliche for a reason. Whether it鈥檚 within the hockey world or a totally different space 鈥 if you apply the same work ethic and dedication you brought to the sport, you鈥檒l find success in whatever path you choose.鈥

In terms of chasing his own dreams, in the short-term, deVos wants to keep creating custom sneakers for people who inspire him 鈥 whether that鈥檚 athletes, entrepreneurs, musicians, comedians, or creators, all while continuing to grow his brand and continue developing relationships in the golf and hockey industries, especially with the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the NHL.

Long-term, deVos would love to grow his brand into a full-time business and eventually work for himself 鈥 doing what he鈥檚 passionate about every day.

While deVos continues to build a career that would allow him to work for himself, he noted he couldn鈥檛 have done this alone.

鈥淔irst and foremost, my family 鈥 my dad Pete, mom Dy, and brother Andrew. Their support and sacrifices have meant everything, especially since I left home at 18 and moved across the country 鈥 and eventually across the world. That distance hasn鈥檛 been easy. I鈥檇 also like to thank my coaches from OHA, Jason Becker, Craig Bedard, Robert Dirk, Stu Barnes, Kip Noble, and Dixon Ward.鈥

鈥淎nd last but absolutely not least 鈥 my girlfriend and best friend Samara. She鈥檚 been with me through it all: celebrating the wins, helping me through the losses, brainstorming ideas, and reminding me to enjoy every moment. To live in the present. Her support and continued belief in me have been truly meaningful,鈥 added deVos.

For those looking to follow deVos on his journey, you can do so through his Instagram (@jamesdeVos), YouTube (James DeVos) and website (https://deshoechef.com/).

The 泊樂娛樂城app (泊樂娛樂城app) is excited to announce the four winners of the Student-Athlete of the Month Award for March:

For the 2024/25 season the 泊樂娛樂城app is proud to introduce the Student-Athlete of the Month Award for the four different 泊樂娛樂城app divisions/age brackets: Eastern, West Female, West U18 Male (U18 Prep, U17 Prep, U17) and West U15 Male (U15 Prep and U15) .

This award is aimed at recognizing the student-athletes within the 泊樂娛樂城app and acknowledges their hard work, dedication, commitment, leadership, academics and community impact.

We would like to congratulate these four student-athletes, who were all nominated by their programs, for their hard work in the month of March.

East Division – Pasquale Presti, Selwyn House School

“You can’t spell Prestige without Presti! (Taken from a social media post of a recent 泊樂娛樂城app game when Presti scored a ridiculously amazing goal.)

Pasquale is equally impressive off the ice as he is on the ice. His drive, motivation, work ethic, camaraderie, team spirit, and determination are evident in everything he does. He is a three-sport varsity athlete, with soccer, hockey, and baseball rounding out his Grade 12 year. In addition to his athletic achievements, he is also an accomplished actor, recently playing two lead characters in the school play “10 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview”. His humour and physical comedy left the audience in stitches. This play ended six years of noteworthy theatre performances at Selwyn for Pasquale.

From an academic perspective, Pasquale is taking eight advanced and enriched courses in our most rigorous science stream. The college-level courses include Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and English. His Grade 12 overall average is 97.5 %, with 99% in Pre-Cal, Calculus, Chemistry and Biology. He also produced a documentary on his family and the family-owned and operated Presti Homes and Developments for English class. He created this documentary with extreme thought and care, going beyond the expectations of the class. His academic results are exceptional, considering the time devoted to hockey training and travel (mainly when the team had several road trips in January and February, adding up to over three weeks away from school).

Although not an off-ice example, it is essential to highlight Selwyn’s playoff run, finishing second overall. The team played five games in five days while still attending school and meeting all their academic requirements. Pasquale always stayed on top of his work (throughout the season) and was instrumental in the playoff run, encouraging teammates and always giving his all.

In addition to academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities, Pasquale has completed applications to US and Canadian institutions, primarily for architecture programs. He diligently worked on his portfolio independently, creating 10 different pieces using different mediums to highlight his creative and technical skills. So far, this talent and dedication have awarded him admission to six prestigious schools, with merit scholarships totalling $370000 to date (the most awarded to a current grade 12 student).

While we do not rank students at Selwyn House, Pasquale is exceptional. He would place at the top of his class based on his academic performance, the rigor of his course selections, and his outstanding commitment to academics, extracurricular activities, athletics and citizenship.”

West Female Division – McKayla Romano, Pilot Mound Hockey Academy

“McKayla Romano embodies the qualities of a true student-athlete, excelling both on and off the ice. As a dedicated member of the Pilot Mound Hockey Academy, McKayla has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to her academic pursuits, maintaining an impressive GPA while balancing the rigorous demands of her sport. Her leadership skills shine through in the classroom, where she actively participates in group projects, often taking the initiative to guide her peers and ensure their collective success.

Beyond her academic achievements, McKayla is deeply involved in community service. She volunteers with our local Can-Skate program, showcasing her compassion and dedication to giving back. In the dressing room, McKayla’s positive attitude and unwavering support for her teammates make her an invaluable presence, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

McKayla’s excellence, hard work, and commitment in all aspects of her life make her truly deserving of this recognition. Her dedication to her studies, her leadership qualities, and her community involvement exemplify the values we strive to instill in our student-athletes.”

West Male U15 Division – Grayson Holmes, Okanagan Hockey Academy

“It is with great enthusiasm that we nominate Grayson Holmes for the 泊樂娛樂城app U15 Student of the Month. Grayson has exemplified outstanding leadership, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout this season, both on and off the ice.

As a key player on the OHA U15 team, Grayson has consistently demonstrated a positive and supportive attitude that has earned him the admiration and respect of his teammates. His leadership goes beyond skill on the ice 鈥 he has been a mentor, motivator, and friend to his peers. Grayson鈥檚 ability to keep the team morale high and foster an inclusive and encouraging environment has been a crucial part of the team’s success. The 泊樂娛樂城app (泊樂娛樂城app) is excited to announce the three winners of the Coach of the Month Award for March: Bourget College (Martin Gascon, FX Girard, & JP Brais), Jordan Mackenzie, and Dennis McKinnon.

For the 2024/25 season the 泊樂娛樂城app is proud to introduce the Coach of the Month Award for the three different 泊樂娛樂城app divisions: Eastern, West Female, and West Male.

This award is aimed at recognizing the incredible coaches within the 泊樂娛樂城app and acknowledges their hard work, dedication, commitment, leadership and impact on the game both on and off the ice.

We would like to congratulate these three coaches, who were all nominated by their programs, for their hard work in the month of March.

East Division: Martin Gascon, FX Girard, & JP Brais – Bourget College

“The Bourget College coaching staff led their team to five wins in five days to win the 泊樂娛樂城app East U18 Championship. They navigated the team through different points of the year, allowing crucial teaching moments to apply to a rigours 泊樂娛樂城app Championships. The team of coaches are extremly dedicated to the development of student-athletes.”

West Female Division: Jordan Mackenzie – Delta Hockey Academy Black

“Delta nominated Jordan after an incredible playoff run that showcased preparation, passion, and leadership. Taking the youngest team in the league from a 13th place finish into the Division II finals was no small feat. From thoughtful details like playoff shirts and green playoff laces to high-intensity practices and countless hours of video prep, every detail was meticulously planned. Coach Jordan instilled belief in a group that had been labeled underdogs and helped them rise to the occasion. The team went 1-0-1 in round robin play, including the final round robin game this team battled through three consecutive overtime games鈥攚inning two of them in thrilling fashion to reach the finals. In the final, facing a significantly older and more experienced opponent, the team showed incredible heart, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to bring the game within one. The resilience Jordan and Paris鈥檚 team displayed was a direct reflection of the growth, mindset, and grit developed all season under Coach Jordan’s guidance.”

West Male Division: Dennis McKinnon – Okanagan Hockey Academy

“OHA is honoured to nominate Dennis in recognition of his exceptional leadership as the OHA U17 Head Coach. Under his guidance, the team concluded the season with an impressive 25 wins, securing second place in the division, before capping off their remarkable performance by winning the U17 Division I Championship.

However, Dennis鈥檚 impact goes far beyond wins and losses. His focus on building both skilled players and strong character has proven to be his true “X-Factor.” By fostering a positive, cohesive, and disciplined team culture, he has created an environment where players thrive not only as athletes but as individuals.

Throughout the season, Dennis has been committed to strengthening team bonds and promoting personal growth. He hosted team breakfasts and arranged various team-building activities, creating an atmosphere of unity and mutual respect. Additionally, he arranged for his players to volunteer with the Salvation Army Kettle Bells initiative over the holiday season. This community involvement gave the team a chance to give back while learning invaluable lessons in teamwork, humility, and the importance of service to others. Dennis鈥檚 dedication to these experiences underscores his belief that growth happens both on and off the ice.

Dennis鈥檚 meticulous attention to detail鈥攚hether in his coaching strategies or his commitment to his players’ overall development鈥攄emonstrates his unwavering focus on upholding the program鈥檚 core values. He ensures his players are not only prepared for the game but also equipped for success in life.

Dennis’s leadership has also had a profound impact on his coaching staff. His assistant coach has flourished in their role, thanks to the mentorship, guidance, and support Dennis provides. By empowering both players and staff, Dennis creates opportunities for growth at every level of the program.

In all aspects of his leadership, Dennis McKinnon exemplifies discipline, dedication, and the spirit of mentorship, making him a deserving winner for Coach of the Month.”
